The Whippet is a descendant of the Greyhound from England since the early 15th century. The early Victorian English writers described the Whippet as snap-dog bred for snapping up prey like rabbits. Among racing enthusiasts, the Whippet has engaged in coursing competitions and dog races. Whippets are known to chase a rag dragged along a straight course in lure coursing. Whippets are very fast dogs capable of speeds up to 35 mph that can easily outrun other breeds in their weight category.
Whippets were first introduced in Massachusetts by English mill operators from England. In 1888 it earned the recognition of the American Kennel Club.
The Whippet's natural athletic build requires regular exercise, proper nutrition, and veterinary visits to maintain its optimal health. They make excellent house dogs for those looking for a companion, as well as an active lifestyle.
