National Hug Your Dog Day

If you haven't hugged your dog at all, today is a special day to do just that. The National Hug Your Dog Day is an opportunity to show our dogs just how much they mean to us.
If you have a dog that don't mind being hugged, a return in kind isn't a bad idea.
Then again, some dogs don't always feel being hugged as a show of affection by their owners. Instead, they may try to turn their heads away, bark or even run away from you. But don't let that make you feel bad or less important either.
Like people, dogs have their own personal space to be theirs alone. Invading their personal spaces can be threatening to them and only increases their stress levels. Instead, as pet owners we want them to feel safe and welcomed.
Appreciating our pets unique and peculiar behaviors that we sometimes find inhumane or unnatural shouldn't deter you from showing your affection in other ways.
Here are some ways to celebrate this special day with your dog.
- Spend more time with your dog. Dogs are social animals. They enjoy the company of others, playing fetch and going on walks.
- Give them a new toy. Toys offer mental and physical stimulation. Toys provide them playtime and delights them any time and any day!
- Use treats to get them to like you. If a toy doesn't catch their attention, pet treats will. Use treats to reward their good behavior but do it in moderation.
- Reward them with positive praises. Dogs have sensitive hearing. They respond to loud and threatening noises as they would in any stressful environment. Show your love by talking to them in a soft and loving tone that they'll appreciate more.
On that note, go on and make this day a special one for your dog.
