Can dogs really tell what they're tasting?

Posted by Tom Shannon on

Dogs have about 1,700 taste buds. We humans have between 2,000–10,000.

Most of us will probably agree that how we taste our food changes how we see food as either appetizing or not. Our taste buds can number from 2,000 to 10,000 receptors that allow us to tell sweet from sour, or salt and bitter. This has allowed us to associate food as either something we'd want to eat or avoid altogether. For instance, most of us will find foods that have high salt content to be unpleasant and unpalatable.

But when it comes to dogs, they tend to be less selective. With a few exceptions, a dog will likely eat pretty much anything they see that's thrown to them. Their food mainly consists of beef, chicken, lamb, and other animal meats can contain a relatively higher amount of salt when compared to non-animal or vegetarian food sources like legumes namely green peas, chickpeas, and other beans.

Regardless of which food you prefer to feed your dog, highly salted food won't make food less desirable for your dog. Matter of fact, dogs require a healthy dose of salt. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), a private non-profit organization responsible for defining and establishing guidelines for ingredients used in animal and pet food recommends that dry dog food contain at least 0.3% (or at least 0.2% sodium for dry cat food) to support a dog's normal growth and development.

In addition to their daily food portions, many dogs may likely eat more than the minimum amount of salt in the form of treats and bones that they get during training sessions or as rewards for good behavior. Giving dogs an excess amount of dog treats can lead to harmful effects on their health, however, the added salt content in dog treats and chews when given on a relatively infrequent basis doesn't usually cause problems.
