The Anatolian Shepherd is a breed native to Turkey for more than 6,000 years. The Anatolian is also known as the Kangal Shepherd that is popular among Turkish nomads and sheepherders. Contrary to its name, the Anatolian Shepherd is not a herding dog but rather a flock protector of sheep to fend off predators like wolves, jackals and bears.
The Anatolian Shepherd's large, muscular build and powerful bite has made them an indispensable dog for farmers. In recent times, the breed has found its way in African countries like Namibia and Kenya that rely on livestock protection against lions and cheetahs.
The Anatolian Shepherd's innate instinct as guardian and protector make them an excellent family dog. However, small children require extra supervision because the Anatolian can interpret rough play as something outside its comfort zone.
The Anatolian Shepherd's coat can be as short as 1 inch to as long as 4 inches require regular grooming. The breed also requires regular exercise to keep their muscles and joints in healthy condition.
