On April 29, thirty cats were found abandoned in cages without food or water alongside Southern State Parkway in Long Island. They were rescued by John DeBacker, who was alerted by two teenagers. The cats were previously owned by Thomas McDermott, who had become unhoused and was living with them in the woods. Following their rescue, the cats were taken to a shelter for health evaluations, and an investigation into potential animal cruelty is underway.
